Coatings that can be made from MOST suspensions will adsorb various ionic and non-ionic dissolved chemical species, including heavy metals and toxic organics, allowing one to treat feed streams containing contaminants at low concentration. Bulk materials made from these suspensions are likely to be too expensive for general use as adsorbents.

The materials offered for commercial sale by MOST are made via sol-gel processing techniques developed at the University of Wisconsin-Madison (UW-Madison). These techniques produce suspensions of nanoparticle oxides in water that are stable for up to several years. .
