MOST sells suspensions composed of nanoparticulate oxides. When these suspensions are coated on conducting substrates such as metals or carbon, the particles self-assemble forming nanoporous thin films that greatly reduce the overpotential associated with splitting water into hydrogen and oxygen. The resulting electrodes perform almost as well as platinum electrodes.
Assembly
This image shows an enhanced water electrolysis reactor being assembled for this project.
Better Electrolyzation
Stainless steel plates coated with nanoparticle oxides can be used to electrolyze water with less degradation of the stainless steel than on uncoated plates. The resulting stream of hydrogen and oxygen can be fed into an internal combustion engine to increase gas mileage while reducing engine pollution. The reactor built for this study is shown.
Improved Gas Mileage
Installed in the engine of a pickup truck, this water electrolysis reactor assembly helped the truck obtain improved gas mileage.
